Southern Connecticut Pop Warner (SCPW) is a
non-profit football and cheer league that consists of 17 cities and towns from
Fairfield, Hartford and New Haven counties, with over 4000 participants. SCPW is
one of the eight leagues that formulate the New England Region for Pop Warner.
SCPW is regulated by the Pop Warner Little Scholarsฎ
(PWLS), which is a national non-profit organization, which is in its 79th year
of operation with over 360,000 participants in the United States. The mission of
all Pop Warner organizations is to enable children to benefit from
participation in team sports and activities in a safe and structured
environment. Through this active participation, Pop Warner programs teach
fundamental values, skills and knowledge that children will use throughout their
lives.
PWLS is the only national youth sports organization
that requires scholastic aptitude in order to participate. Since safety is a
major concern of PWLS, several policies are in place to address safety. The age
and weight matrix that Pop Warner uses enables kids to compete with kids of
similar age and weight, and therefore reduces the risk of injury. Volunteers and
coaches are being trained every year to offer the best and safest programs for
the participants. These volunteers and anyone who provides regular service to
the league or has access to or contact with the participants must undergo
background checks annually, which is in place to protect the children. There
also is a Minimum Play Requirement (MPR), which assures all children will play.
PWLS annually publishes a new rulebook, which incorporates lessons learned from
the previous season.
SCPW has an 8 game regular season,
which traditionally begins Labor Day weekend. We are divided into 2 Divisions of
play. Division 1 consists of the larger associations and Division 2 consists of
the smaller ones. SCPW has teams at five levels based on age and weight; Mighty
Mites, Junior Peewees, Pewees, Jr. Midgets and Midgets. At the end of the
season, SCPW has league championship playoffs, which result in a league champion
at each level for each division (except mighty mites). The eight remaining teams
enter the national playoff bracket with an opportunity to travel
to Disney World to play for the National Championship.
SCPW also has a competitive cheer program. Not only
do the cheerleaders support the football teams on Sundays, but they also prepare
for the annual SCPW competition in October. Winners and the runner-ups qualify
for the States and New England Regional tournament and have an opportunity to
compete for the national championship in Disney World.
The executive board of SCPW is committed to
assuring all associations are treated fairly and all participants involved will
learn football and cheer, while also having fun. SCPW is responsible for
scheduling, coordinating league events, hosting clinics and verifying that all
associations are complying with the National and SCPW rules and regulations.
